Olympus 850 SW

August 12th, 2008

Olympus Stylus 850 SW features:

# 8 megapixels
# 3x optical zoom
# 2.5 inch LCD
# ISO up to 1600
# Waterproof and shockproof

What really sets this camera apart is its build quality, which allow it to survive treatment that would render other cameras inoperative. It has just about every feature you would want plus you can take it in the shower. The 850 SW is a sleek, well-designed camera that’s easy to carry around, considering it weighs only about 140 g. The entire camera has been designed not just to withstand some hard knocks but moisture too. If you’re into diving you can sink with it up to a depth of 10 feet. The battery/XD card compartment and USB port (proprietary for some odd reason) which also doubles as an AV-out are all comfortably protected by special waterproof seals and gaskets. The main reason this camera is so attractive is its toughness. To make sure your photos are good make sure and stay between ISO 64 and 400, anything above that suffers. One of the weakest aspects of the camera is the color balance which has not seen improvement over earlier models. Inaccurate colors reveal themselves primarily with indoor shots, however, outdoor pictures seemed normal.

Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens

July 31st, 2008

Canon’s EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens that integrates high speed USM (ultrasonic motor) with full time manual focusing is the first macro lens in this focal length specially designed for the small (APS-C) size sensors of the 350D, 400D, and 30D cameras. The lens features an IF (internal focus) design so the front element does not rotate and the length of the lens remains constant, regardless of the chosen focus distance. The lens allows full-time manual override in one-shot AF mode, typical for ring-type USM lenses. The minimum focus distance is 0.2m, which results in a maximum magnification of 1;1. The lens uses 52mm thread. There is a provision made for mounting the ET-67B lens hood, although this is an extra. The magnification ratio scale available on the 60mm Macro’s ft/m distance window helps in determining the magnification at which you are shooting. The lens shows light loss at high magnification values, which is common to most macro lenses. It consists of twelve elements in eight groups without any special elements. It features eight circular aperture blades. As common in most macro lenses, a floating system is used in order to achieve a constant performance throughout all focusing distances. The lens is small and compact with a weight of just 335g and a size of 73x70mm. It performs very well though one should consider the restricted number of cameras that it will fit before buying this lens.
